Guarnaschelli is the daughter of the cookbook editor Maria Guarnaschelli and John Guarnaschelli. Barnard College awarded her a diploma in art history in 1991. In 1991 she worked for minimal wage at a bar called an American Place for one year. Guarnaschelli began her cooking career by helping her mother to experiment with various recipes before editing cookbooks. Guarnaschelli started her career working as a sous chef under Larry Forgione. Her son Marc Forgione was the Iron Chef. Guarnaschelli then went on to work at various restaurants throughout France as well as Los Angeles. Guy Savoy is the owner of La Butte Chaillot. Before joining Butter Guarnaschelli, she was executive chef in the Patina restaurant, owned by Daniel Boulud and at Joachim Splichal's Patina. The restaurant was closed in the summer of 2005. she served as the executive chef at the Darby. She chaired the Food Museum's Culinary Council. The first Guarnaschelli book was released. "Old School Comfort food What I learned about how to Cook" is a collection of autobiographical stories as well as her most loved recipes from books she's modified to her home.
